Marietta Charakida, MD, PhD

Dr. Marietta Charakida is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics – Pediatric and Fetal Cardiology at the 2nd Department of Pediatrics, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). She graduated with distinction from the NKUA Medical School and holds two PhDs — from University College London and the University of Athens. She completed her training in Pediatrics in Greece and subspecialty training in Pediatric and Fetal Cardiology in the UK.
She trained and worked at leading pediatric centers in London, including Great Ormond Street Hospital, Evelina Children’s Hospital, and King’s College Hospital. She has served as Consultant in Pediatric and Fetal Cardiology and as Senior Lecturer at University College London and King’s College London. With over 15,000 fetal and pediatric echocardiograms performed, she holds expertise in congenital heart disease, prenatal cardiovascular diagnostics, and vascular imaging techniques.
Her research portfolio includes more than 175 publications in peer-reviewed journals, an h-index of 46, and over 7,900 citations. She has authored 15 international textbook chapters (ESC Cardiomed, Springer) and contributed to three Greek academic textbooks. She has supervised six PhD theses abroad and is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching both in Greece and internationally.
She has received research funding from prestigious institutions such as the British Heart Foundation (BHF), Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF), Toshiba Medical, King’s College London, Guy’s & St Thomas’s Charity, and the Eugenides Foundation. She participates in international multicenter studies and cohort collaborations, including EMBRACE (£35 million), ALSPAC, SEA CHANGE, Eurovasc, and the 1946 British Birth Cohort, maintaining strong research ties with centers in the UK, Spain, and Bulgaria.
Her academic and clinical work focuses on early cardiovascular prevention, accurate fetal diagnostics, and holistic, family-centered care. She is an active member of several scientific societies including the European Society of Cardiology, the British Congenital Cardiac Association, the Hellenic Cardiology Society and Hellenic Congenital Heart Disease Society and has received international recognition for her research contributions.
