Rheumatology Unit

Pediatric Rheumatology Unit second department of pediatrics Athens medical school

The Pediatric Rheumatology Unit at our tertiary university hospital provides specialized care for children and adolescents with rheumatic, autoimmune, and autoinflammatory diseases. Our multidisciplinary team includes pediatric rheumatologists, nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists, and social workers, all dedicated to delivering comprehensive, evidence-based care.

We diagnose and manage a wide range of conditions, including juvenile idiopathic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, vasculitis, and other rare inflammatory disorders. Patients are referred from across the region for evaluation of persistent joint pain, swelling, unexplained fevers, rashes, and other symptoms suggestive of rheumatic disease.

Our approach combines advanced diagnostic techniques, laboratory testing, and imaging to ensure accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plans. We focus on controlling inflammation, preventing complications, and supporting healthy growth and development, with the goal of enabling every child to lead an active and fulfilling life.

The unit is actively involved in clinical research and academic teaching, contributing to national and international efforts to improve understanding and treatment of pediatric rheumatic diseases. Families may be invited to participate in research studies or educational programs designed to enhance knowledge and support long-term management.

We emphasize family-centered care, ensuring that parents and caregivers are fully informed and involved in every stage of diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. Our team is committed to providing clear information, emotional support, and practical guidance to help families navigate the challenges of chronic illness.
