The Pediatric Gastroenterology Clinic of the Second University Clinic of the University of Athens covers all fields of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Nutrition

Procedures: Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are performed in the Endoscopy Unit of the Hospital, such as Upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, polypectomies, esophageal dilations, esophageal variceal banding, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, hemostasis, and percutaneous liver biopsy. Esophageal pH study/ impedance and breath tests for Helicobacter are also provided to the Clinic.

Clinics of the Hepatology-Nutrition Gastroenterology Unit

  • General Gastroenterology Clinic: for patients with gastroesophageal reflux, digestive disease, chronic malabsorption syndromes, food allergy, growth retardation, etc.
  • Hepatology Clinic: for patients with elevated transaminases, viral hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, sclerosing cholangitis, metabolic liver diseases, biliary atresia, Alagille syndrome, Wilsondisease
  • Liver Transplant Clinic: for patients undergoing pre-transplant screening but also after liver or liver-kidney transplantation. Transplant patients are monitored for regular check-ups or emergencies. Coordinated care with blood Sampling, nutritional assessment, as well as assessment by other specialties from the Hospital’s departments.
  • Clinic for Idiopathic Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: for patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease) for the diagnosis, monitoring and coordination of treatment and therapies with biological agents. The administration of biological agents is done in the Day Care Unit (MOMHN) of the Hospital.
  • Special Nutrition, Swallowing Disorders &Total Parenteral Nutrition at home: for patients who are fed with special formulas, either through a feeding tube-gastrostomy, nasogastric tube or with home parenteral nutrition. Coordinated care with a nutritionist, speech therapist, ENT physician and general surgeons.
