PNEUMONOLOGY UNIT

The Pulmonology Unit was established and equipped in 2001 under the direction and with the support of Professor Themistoklis Karpathios, with ESY Director Polyxeni Taprantzi as Scientific Director. The Unit contributes to the treatment of children with serious or specific, acute or chronic respiratory diseases who are hospitalized in the Second Pediatric Clinic and other Pediatric Clinics of the Hospital. At the same time, a Pulmonology Clinic operates twice a week. The Pulmonology Clinic treats children suffering from chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, dyskinesia, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, recurrent pneumonia, and congenital anomalies. The Unit has the equipment and expertise to perform respiratory function tests, such as spirometry, flow measurement, reversal testing, fatigue testing, lung volume and diffusion testing. It is estimated that approximately 700-1000 children are examined at the clinic each year.

The Unit trains medical residents and pediatricians in the treatment of children with respiratory problems. One to two pediatricians with an interest in pediatric pulmonology are employed on a permanent basis as salaried associates, while the clinic’s services are also supported by a nurse.

The clinic operates every week under the supervision of Ms. P. Xepapadaki.
