Dimitrios Gourgiotis is an Emeritus Professor of Clinical Biochemistry at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), with a long-standing and multifaceted academic and research contribution.
He served as Professor of Clinical Biochemistry from 2013 to 2018, and for nearly four decades (1979–2018), he was head of the Laboratory of Clinical Biochemistry – Molecular Diagnostics at the 2nd University Pediatric Clinic at “P. & A. Kyriakou” Children’s Hospital.
At the same time, he held the position of training supervisor for students and residents, as well as head of the clinic’s research division. He was actively involved in administrative and scientific bodies, such as the hospital’s Scientific Council and the Ethics & Deontology Committee. He holds a degree in Chemistry from the University of Patras and a PhD in Clinical Biochemistry from the NKUA Medical School.
His scientific contribution is exceptionally significant, with over 140 publications in peer-reviewed international journals, a total Impact Factor of 674, and more than 4,900 citations.
His h-index is 38, and his i10-index reaches 88, according to Google Scholar. He has presented over 300 papers at international and Greek scientific conferences and has participated in highly influential research projects.
His main research activities include molecular diagnostics of pediatric leukemias, the study of non-coding RNAs, biomarker analysis in malignancies and chronic childhood diseases, as well as the diagnostic approach to preeclampsia.
His work is considered a landmark in the field of research in Pediatrics and Clinical Biochemistry in Greece.
